Water in Hungarian folk art

On 27th October 2005 fourth and fifth-form pupils interested in Hungarian folk art came together in the school library.

ImageThe meeting started with a small exhibition. Children brought different articles of folk art found at home or in the neighbourhood. They talked proudly about the history of their table-clothes, coal irons, wall-hangings, jugs, leather flasks, and mortars. One boy showed his own woodcarving. Everybody agreed that our folk art is important. We must keep its values, and keep it alive. Image
Later we talked about the importance of water lots of years ago. The children recognised that people in the past were at the mercy of the forces of nature: the rain, the flood. People used the river not only for water the animals, but they washed their clothes and washed themselves in it.
We continued our programme with solving riddles, idioms and proverbs connecting to water. The wisdom of peasants, explanation of experience required creative thinking.
ImageAt the end of the meeting we played “Bridge game”, which preserves memories of medieval bridge toll. All children enjoyed singing.
We think children spent this afternoon in a good mood learning a lot of interesting things.
